Electrician in Plain Township, OH

The stretch between Canton and North Canton: postwar ranches, 1960s split-levels and newer streets farther east.

Plain Township wraps around the north and east sides of Canton, between the city and North Canton. Much of its housing went up from the 1950s through the 1970s, with newer developments as you head east and north.

Homes from those decades bring their own checklist. Some houses built in the late 1960s and early 1970s used aluminum branch wiring, which needs the right connectors to stay safe. Many original panels are full, and kitchens and baths were wired before GFCI protection was required.

My Plain Township house might have aluminum wiring. Is it dangerous?

Aluminum branch wiring from the late 1960s and early 1970s isn’t dangerous by itself, but its connections can loosen and overheat over time. The accepted repairs are connectors and devices specifically rated for aluminum. If you see warm cover plates, flickering or a burning smell, turn that circuit off and call.

Where do I need GFCI outlets?

Current code calls for GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, laundry areas, outdoors and near any sink, among other places. Older homes weren’t built that way. Adding GFCI protection in those areas is one of the most effective safety updates you can make.

How do I know if my panel is full?

Open the panel door. If every space has a breaker, or you see two wires under one breaker screw or ‘tandem’ breakers everywhere, you’re out of room. Adding a circuit then means a subpanel or a larger panel, which a load calculation will decide.
