Electrician in Canton, OH

Our home town. From the brick-street blocks near downtown to the northwest side where we’re based.

Custom Electric is a Canton company. We’re based on the city’s northwest side, and most of our work is within a short drive of it: Ridgewood and the streets off Market Avenue North, the older neighborhoods ringing downtown, and the newer homes toward the city’s edges.

Canton grew fast in the first half of the twentieth century, and a lot of the housing is from that era. That means plaster walls, original wiring that has been extended by several owners, two-prong outlets, and services that were sized long before anyone owned a microwave, a window air conditioner and a space heater at the same time.

Common jobs in Canton

  • Fuse box and panel replacements
  • Grounding and GFCI updates in older homes
  • Ceiling fans in plaster ceilings
  • Kitchen and bath circuits
  • Light fixture and receptacle repairs

Q&ACanton questions

Asked in Canton.

Straight answers to questions we hear here. More in the full electrical Q&A.

Does an electrician need a license to work in Canton?

Yes. The City of Canton requires electrical contractors to register with its Building Department, and registration requires a current electrical contractor license from the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB). Custom Electric’s license, EL.45285, is held by Larry D. Whipkey II.

Who is the electric utility in Canton?

Most of the City of Canton is served by AEP Ohio, while much of the surrounding county is Ohio Edison. The utility’s name is on your bill. You call the utility for outages and meter issues; an electrician handles everything from the meter base into the house.

My Canton house still has two-prong outlets. Is that a problem?

Two-prong outlets mean the circuit has no equipment ground. That isn’t an emergency, but it limits what you can safely plug in. The fix is either running a ground or protecting the circuit with GFCI protection and labeling it, which the code allows. We look at the wiring and recommend the right option for each circuit.
